5 signs a student needs someone to talk to

By the AHERI team · September 2026 · 4 minute read

Young people in a support circle

Many students carry worry quietly. Exams, school fees, family trouble and the fear of the future can sit on a young person every day, and most will not say it out loud.

The signs to watch for

  • A sudden drop in grades or interest in school
  • Pulling away from friends and activities they used to enjoy
  • Sleeping far more or far less than usual
  • Anger or tears that seem out of place
  • Talk of being a burden, feeling hopeless or giving up

What you can do

You do not need to be an expert to help. Sit with the student somewhere private, listen without judgement and ask how you can help. Do not rush to fix everything.

Then connect them to a trusted adult, a school counsellor or the AHERI CARE HUB, where a trained listener can talk with them privately. If anyone is in danger, call 112 straight away.
