Special Seats Bill for women
A proposed change to the Constitution to create extra seats for women in parliament.
Key provisions
1Would add seats reserved for women in the National Assembly.
2Would add seats reserved for women in State Houses of Assembly.
3Aims to raise the very low number of women in law making in Nigeria.
Where it stands across Nigeria
On 24 September 2026 the Speaker of the House of Representatives said the bill was being refined at the Ministry of Justice. A change to the Constitution needs the National Assembly and most State Houses of Assembly to agree.
This is still a bill, so it does not apply in any state yet. We will add a map when it becomes law.
What it means for you
More women in law making means more attention to issues that shape the lives of women and girls.
