Know Your Rights Outreach
The law in plain words for 6,000 students in 12 schools and 2,880 women and youths in 48 community sessions, with a safe route to legal help.

Why we are doing this
- Ten years after the VAPP Act became law, only 49.3% of Nigerians have heard of it, and only 29% of those understand it well. Awareness falls to 23.8% among people with no formal education and 42.9% in rural areas. (Invictus Africa, 2025)
- In 2024, 19% of women had experienced physical violence since the age of 15, and 23% had experienced violence from a partner. UN Women warns that fewer survivors are seeking help. (UN Women, June 2026)
- Around 6 in 10 Nigerian children experience violence before they turn 18. (Violence Against Children Survey)
- In the FCT, more than 3,000 reports of gender based violence led to 36 convictions. (Invictus Africa, 2025)
- Every state except Kano has adopted the VAPP law, and 35 of 36 states have adopted the Child Rights Act. The laws exist. (Vanguard, May 2026)
- FIDA Nigeria, the Legal Aid Council and many NGOs offer free legal help, and radio and social media campaigns raise awareness.
Laws only protect people who know them and know what to do next. Few programmes combine plain language teaching in schools and communities with a safe referral to a lawyer and someone who walks with a survivor through reporting. Know Your Rights Outreach does both, in English, Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.
What will change
Over 24 months, from January 2027 to December 2028:
- 48 school sessions and 12 rights clubs, reaching 6,000 students with the Child Rights Act and how to report safely
- 48 community sessions in markets, women’s groups, campuses and community halls, reaching 2,880 women and youths
- 10,000 plain language leaflets on the VAPP Act and the Child Rights Act, in 5 languages
- 80 people supported to report, get a protection order or see a lawyer, through AHERI’s pro bono lawyers
- Awareness of the VAPP Act among participants rises by at least 30 percentage points from baseline
The laws already exist, but every month people are hurt without knowing that help and justice are possible. With fewer survivors seeking help, plain language education and a trusted route to legal support are needed now, starting with the 16 Days of Activism and continuing every term.

Prices are estimates at November 2026 prices. Staff are costed as a share of their time. Teachers, students and community members are never charged. Indirect costs of 10% cover finance, safeguarding, audit and office support. Fees are paid directly to schools and service providers, never in cash.
Ways to fund this project
24 months of change, with your name on it if you wish.
